The SA53-IHZ is a low cost PWM motor driver IC in the 3 amp power range. As a monolithic, single package solution, the SA53-IHZ provides a high level of integration for driving brush DC motors in the market space between lower current devices and higher cost drivers operating on 400+ voltage supplies.

The SA53-IHZ delivers 3 A of continuous output current (10 A PEAK) on supply voltages up to 60 V. A seamless digital interface is possible with either a MCU or DSP, while allowing individual control of the top side and bottom side output FETs via direct signals from the processor. A 64-pin Power Quad package (PowerQFP) measuring less than two cm2 square saves on board space. A patent-pending mounting technique can increase the package’s power dissipation capabilities by 3X by placing the driver upside down “through” the board and flush mounting the heatsink.

Protection features of the SA53-IHZ include cycle-by-cycle current limit functionality that allows the motor’s power system to “partner” with the processor or DSP to control motor current in each phase rather than settle for an overall safe limit. With cycle-by-cycle current limit, these driver’s have the ability to handle the inrush of motor start-up current without de-rating the IC, even at 5 A or greater.

Fully assembled demonstration boards are available to help with rapid prototyping. The DB53R comes fully assembled including an evaluation unit of the SA53-IHZ.
